FLUSHING — A North Carolina man who tried to cross the Long Island Expressway Saturday night in Flushing died after being struck by a vehicle, the NYPD said.
Rhadames Diaz, 34, attempted to cross the expressway from south to north in the vicinity of 169th Street, according to the police.
Diaz ran from the center wall of the expressway and into the left travel lane, where he was struck by a 2015 Toyota Suburban, whose driver attempted to brake and swerve to the right but struck him, officials said.
When police arrived at the scene after receiving a call at about 9:45 p.m., they found Diaz lying on the highway with severe body trauma, police said. The driver remained at the scene.
He was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead.
The investigation was ongoing, according to a police spokeswoman.
