Local Project, a visual art space in Long Island City, is looking to give emerging musicians a chance to perform in an acoustic series titled Music Under the 7.

The series was created in February 2011 by music industry veteran and board member of Local Project, June Kosloff, who grew up in Jamaica and is also a visual artist. She wanted to merge her two favorite mediums and give musicians a chance to play in an intimate setting.

Local Project was previously located in an office space at the building that housed 5Pointz and got its name from the constant rumblings employees would hear from the 7 train.

“It’s really just a way to bring these two art forms together to put it simply and to have emerging musicians find a place to play and meet other ones,” Kosloff said. “[At] the first [series], I was blown away. It was really special. It’s just magical.”

Music Under the 7 will take place four times throughout next year and three to four artists will play during each date for a 20- to 30-minute set. Kosloff said the series is not genre specific but that musicians should keep in mind that the shows will be acoustic. Local Spot will provide a PA system, three microphones and stands.

Though the shows are free, they are considered benefit performances and the $5 suggested donation will go toward helping the nonprofit organization and transportation fees to get the musicians home.

Past acts have included Algiers, a band that recently got signed to Matador Records, Bird Courage, Laura Dunn, Free Advice and more.

There is no set deadline for musicians to apply and interested parties can email info@localproject.org with a link to their music.
