Driver arrested for failing to yield and killing a pedestrian in Flushing

A 57-year-old man died after he was struck by an SUV in Flushing on Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred at about 8:57 a.m. at the corner of 35th Avenue and Prince Street.

Authorities said that Ramon Ortiz, 55, a resident of 1280 East 70th St., Brooklyn, was driving a 2009 Ford Suburban traveling southbound on Prince Street when made a left turn onto 35th Avenue, and he struck the pedestrian who was crossing 35th Avenue. Ortiz was arrested and charged with failing to yield to pedestrian.

The victim suffered a severe trauma to his body and was transported to NewYork Presbyterian/Queens hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity was withheld by police pending family notification.
