Intoxicated Ozone Park woman drives into a JFK building, injuring a National Guard member

A woman from Ozone Park has been arrested for crashing her car into a building at JFK Airport and hitting a uniformed National Guard member on Wednesday, police said.

According to officers, Tanya Hernandez, 30, of 95th Avenue in Ozone Park, was driving on the Van Wyck Expressway north service road at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3, while allegedly impaired by alcohol and/or drugs when her car jumped the curb and struck building 111 at JFK.

One on-duty National Guard member who was posted in the lobby of the building sustained injuries to his leg and hand when the car crashed into the building, police announced. He was transported to Jamaica Hospital.

The crash also caused substantial glass damage to the front of the building, police said, but no structural damage.

According to law enforcement agents, Hernandez received minor injuries and was placed under arrest by Port Authority police. She allegedly made statements about drinking all night and there was a small quantity of a suspected controlled substance found in the vehicle. Her driver’s license has two suspensions on two separate dates as well.

Hernandez has been charged with assault in the third degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance, operating an auto impaired by drugs, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and criminal mischief.
