As the project to bring bigger and better sewer lines to residents of Middle Village continues, the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) has announced a water service interruption for the area for this week.

According to the DDC, starting on or about Monday, Aug. 8, through Friday, Aug. 12, water service will be shut down on Juniper Boulevard South between 72nd and 76th streets, and 74th Street between Juniper Boulevard South and Penelope Avenue. All service interruptions are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. and will last for approximately eight hours. On occasion, the work may be completed earlier, leading to water service being restored sooner.

The water service interruptions are needed to facilitate the installation of the new 12-inch water main, the DDC said. The work was originally scheduled to take place last month but was postponed until this week.

The DDC recommends that affected residents shut off the water main valve in their building in order to avoid problems that may occur if/when sediment enters or is released from the plumbing.

Residents are asked to shut off all water cooled appliances, which may include air conditioners, and once water service is returned, turn the main house valve back on and flush the system by running faucets to sinks and tubs for a about 15 to 30 minutes.

Along with the water service shutdown, this project brings some parking restrictions for the same affected area.

According to the DDC, restrictions to curbside parking and driveway access will be in effect from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., weather and field conditions permitting, for approximately one month. “No Parking” restrictions will be in effect and “No Parking” signs will be posted throughout the area. Vehicles that are parked in “No Parking” zones will be towed by the contractor. Contact the Community Construction Liaison (CCL) or the 104th Precinct for the towing list.

Emergency vehicle access, as well as pedestrian access to sidewalks entryways, will be maintained at all times. Gas, electric, telephone, and cable services will not be interrupted.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to be added to the electronic Neighborhood Notification Network (NNN) list, please contact the CCL, Lisbeth Lora, at 718-326-3840 or e-mail penelopeaveccl[at]gmail.com.
