Get your binoculars and work gloves ready for a fun afternoon out in Forest Park this weekend.
The Natural Areas Conservancy is co-hosting a special Richmond Hill Green Neighborhood event with the NYC Parks Department on Saturday, Sept. 17, where participants will get the chance to go birdwatching before helping to clean up the surrounding restoration site.
The day kicks off at 9 a.m. with Cesar Castillo from the Queens County Bird Club leading a tour of Forest Park beginning at Strack Pond, located at Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park Drive. Lucky birdwatchers will get to see one of the largest warbler populations in the city at a freshwater site in Forest Park.
Afterwards, the forest restoration project will begin in an effort to support the area’s natural woodlands.
There is absolutely no experience necessary to participate in either the birdwatching or the restoration project. Training will be provided the day of the event.
The Parks Department advises visitors to come dressed in long pants, closed-toed shoes — boots or sneakers are preferred — and clothing that can get dirty.
To sign up for the event’s waitlist visit the Parks Department website.
