The winner of a storage unit auction in Long Island City got a gruesome surprise on Monday.

After an auction was held on Oct. 17 to sell off abandoned storage units at American Self Storage, located at 47-30 29th St. in Long Island City, the winner found two freezers in his unit that contained 40 frozen cats.

The cats were found in plastic bags and another cat was found skinned on an aluminum tray, according to the NYPD.

A 30-year-old female employee at American Self Storage called 911 when she saw the cats at about 5:26 p.m. Police said the storage unit had been paid for by a 66-year-old woman who stopped making her monthly payments in July. The winner bought the unit for $150 but was able to get his money back.

According to WABC-TV, the ASPCA is scheduled to perform necropsies on the cats, but must wait until they thaw out to do so.

The investigation is ongoing.
