Who has a stomach of steel?
Come down to The Avenue Restaurant & Bar in Glendale on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11, to find out who will be the “King of the Wing” during a charity chicken wing-eating contest.
The contest will pit three men, three women and one veteran against each other to see who can eat the most chicken wings in 10 minutes. Each contestant will get sponsors to donate money per wing eaten, with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Middle Village.
All of the chicken wings that will be eaten will be donated by the host restaurant.
“We have been a supporter of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life for the previous four years,” said Robert Schoemig, owner of The Avenue Restaurant & Bar. “This year we were asked to host a wing-eating event since we serve some of the best wings in NYC, so what we are doing is we are donating the wings for the contestants to consume. The contestants get sponsors that pledge X amount of dollars toward each wing that is eaten; all proceeds go to the Walk of Life. Being a lifetime member of the community and having family and friends that are affected by cancer, it is my pleasure and responsibility to help support this fundraiser.”
Some of the contestants in the “King of the Wing” contest include veteran and member of the 104th Precinct Community Observation Patrol (104COP) John Kablack, 104COP President Marc Pearson, as well as George Rosario and Leandra Navetta, Schoemig confirmed.
“This is a great fundraising event that the proceeds will go toward the Middle Village Relay for Life,” said Len Santoro, member of the Middle Village Relay for Life and president of the 104th Precinct Community Council. “Each year, teams think of creative ways to fundraise as well as raise awareness for the cause to fight cancer. It will be lots of fun. We all have been touched by this deadly disease and this this is just one easy way we can all join the fight against it.”
The Avenue Restaurant & Bar is located at 71-22 Myrtle Ave.; the “King of the Wing” contest will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Veterans Day.
