Suspect surrenders in Flushing sucker punch death

The man wanted for punching a 64-year-old pedestrian on a Flushing street has turned himself into police, the NYPD said.

Matthew Smith, 42, of Jamaica has been charged with criminally negligent homicide and assault five months after he was accused of hitting Patrick Gorman in the head with his fist on the corner of Queens Boulevard and Main Street June 26, police said. Gorman fell to the ground as Smith and a woman, later identified as his wife, left the scene, according to a video released by the Police Department. Gorman was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.

Police believe Gorman brushed into Elena Makarova, Smith’s 39-year-old wife, and apologized before Smith punched him.

The authorities were still looking for Makarova, who is described as 5-foot-3 and 174 pounds.

The Daily News reported Smith bragged about delivering the fatal blow on Facebook.
