An early morning fire Monday in Middle Village sent a dozen families scurrying into the street, injuring six people and badly damaging a small apartment house behind St. Margaret’s Church.

Twelve trucks and 60 firefighters were called to fight the blaze that broke out at around 7:30 a.m.

Officials could not say immediately what started the fire in a second story of a 12-unit apartment house at 66-42 79th Place.

Three of the injured were firefighters, although the injuries were minor, officials said. One resident was taken to Wykoff Hospital with injuries that were described as non-life threatening. Two others were treated at the scene, said an FDNY spokesman.

Fire officials did not declare the blaze under control for nearly an hour.

The building was constructed in 1971, according to city records.
