With Earth Day right around the corner, local Queens politicians are reminding their constituents to “go green” at a variety of environmentally friendly events being held across the borough in the coming weeks and months.

State Senator Joseph Addabbo, a member of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, recently thanked local Girl Scout Troop #4791 for their work beautifying the area of 81st Street and 77th Avenue in Glendale by planting spring flowers just in time for Earth Day on Saturday, April 22.

“Girl Scout Troop 4791 weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty,” Addabbo said. “Thank you, once more, to everyone who pitched in to help spruce up the community.”

On Sunday, April 30, Addabbo will be co-sponsoring the Spring Recycling Fair Assemblyman Mike Miller and the Glendale Kiwanis at the Forest Park Bandshell, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Crews will be on hand to collect electronics, paper, clothing and certain household items to be properly and safely recycled.

Items that will not be accepted during the event, include air conditioners, newspapers, gas/oil items, paints, mattresses, ovens, office furniture, firearms, light bulbs, liquids, tires or medication.

“There are so many items that people may not know can be recycled, or things that don’t get recycled simply because it’s a hassle to do so,” Addabbo said. “This eliminates those hurdles and provides our constituents with a stress-free way to take care of all their recycling needs. In years past, this annual event has proved to be one of the most popular events I’ve ever held, and I am confident that will continue into this year and for many to come. I thank our vendors for their support and participation year after year, Assemblyman Miller and the Glendale Kiwanis for their partnership, as well as the Department of Parks and Recreation for their cooperation as we hold this great community event.”

Miller recently praised the Department of Sanitation for expanding their e-waste program, but would like to see the program implemented in Queens a lot sooner than they are scheduled to appear in the borough.

“I am happy that Sanitation sees this is a benefit; however, three years to wait for … curbside pick-ups in Community Boards 5, 9 and 10 is too long,” he said. “I hope the City Council will find additional funding for a faster expansion of this program.”

Over the next couple of months, Addabbo will also be co-hosting a trio of rain barrel giveaways in Broad Channel, Howard Beach and Glendale.

The first event on May 21 will be co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato at the American Legion in Broad Channel. Amato will also be co-hosting another rain barrel event in Howard Beach on June 10 at the NYFAC Building on Cross Bay Boulevard.

The third rain barrel giveaway is being co-hosted by Addabbo and Miller on June 17, and will be held in Glendale.
