Police are looking into the death of a 76-year-old taxi driver from Woodside who crashed her cab in Lower Manhattan early on Thursday morning.

At around 1:18 a.m. on May 11, police responded to a 911 call about a yellow taxi that crashed on South End Avenue at Liberty Street, a block west of the World Trade Center complex. Upon their arrival, police found 76-year-old Lena Pitu of 54th Street in Woodside inside the cab.

EMS responded to the scene and transported Pitu to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad found that Pitu was driving northbound on South End Avenue at Liberty Street when the cab struck a metal barrier along the west side sidewalk. No other cars or people were involved in the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
