A man from Maspeth will be spending a year behind bars for attacking a man with a stick while shouting homophobic slurs at him in Brooklyn earlier this year, acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced.

Gonzalez identified the defendant as Loudal Baez, 61, of Maspeth. Baez pleaded guilty to third-degree assault earlier this month, and on Friday, Sept. 15, he was sentenced to one year in jail by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun.

According to the investigation, Baez approached his victim — who was walking with his husband — near Lafayette Avenue and Fulton Street at approximately 9:16 p.m. on the night of Feb. 28, when Baez yelled a homophobic slur at him and struck him on the hip with a stick.

The victim suffered bruising as a result of the assault.

“This defendant assaulted an innocent man who was simply walking down the street with his husband, for no other reason than the victim’s sexual orientation,” Gonzalez said. “[Friday’s] jail sentence holds him accountable for his hateful actions.”
