In the span of just six hours on a Saturday afternoon, the community came together in Pomonok to bring a play space to kids in the area.

The New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Pomonok Houses community has a brand-new playground on its grounds. The community’s new space was made possible by NYCHA, KaBOOM!, the Fund for Public Housing and other local volunteers who worked at the site on Nov. 4.

Pomonok Houses is the first NYCHA community to receive a “NextGen NYCHA Plays” playground. The groups involved in the inaugural project hope to bring more than 200 playgrounds to the city’s public housing residents over the next several years.

The spaces are meant to give the housing complex and surrounding communities a safe place to play.

The Pomonok playground design was based off drawings by the community’s kids that were collected at a special design day event hosted by the Resident Association in August. The space includes a basketball court, volcano feature, slides and more.

“Our community, including some of our youngest NYCHA residents, came together to build a remarkable, creative new playground at Pomonok Houses,” NYCHA chair and CEO Shola Olatoye said. “NextGen NYCHA Plays is an important partnership between KaBOOM!, the Fund for Public Housing and NYCHA, to make sure NYCHA children have a place to explore and play inspired by their own imaginations.”
