On Friday, Jan. 12, Quality Services for the Autism Community (QSAC) will be hosting its seventh annual “Shave the ‘Stache for Autism” event to raise money for autism services.
Shave the ‘Stache was originally started by Paul Halvatzis of Amorelli Realty, who after sporting a mustache for several years found a way to make shaving it off even more worthwhile to those with autism.
“Paul has a son who is on the autism spectrum,” said Pat Barrientos, External Affairs Coordinator at QSAC. “Seven years ago, his family challenged him to shave his mustache that he had for about 35 years, and we’ve been doing it every year since.”
QSAC’s Shave the ‘Stache is the organization’s first event of the New Year. Since the event’s conception seven years ago, Shave the ‘Stache has raised over $90,000 to support QSAC’s services.
The event normally occurs on the first Friday in January at the Redken Saloon Salon in Astoria, however last week’s snow story delayed the event one week.
“The Redken Saloon Salon is gracious enough to lend us their space,” said Barrientos. “They’ve been very helpful for QSAC. We hold it here every year.”
Shave the ‘Stache will take place at the Redken Saloon Salon, located at 6–17 30th Ave., at 7 p.m. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, however donations will be accepted at the door.
Shave the ‘Stache attendees can participate in raffles. Appetizers, drinks and information regarding QSAC’s programming will also be available at the event.
Proceeds from the event go to support and fund the services provided those on the autism spectrum and their families through QSAC.
“The event shows how much the issue touches so many people in different ways,” said Barrientos. ” It’s an amazing event and it’s great to see that we have the community support to continue to have the event continue for seven years.”
