Think safety this spring and take advantage of a free bike helmet giveaway in Fresh Meadows this weekend.

The Department of Transportation is co-sponsoring a free bike helmet fitting and distribution event on Sunday, April 29, at Farm Playground, located next to P.S. 26. Helmets will be distributed from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., while supplies last.

DOT staff will be on site to conduct proper fittings and giveaways. Helmets for children and adults will be available but will only be handed out to individuals who are present at the event.

A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign a waiver for children under age 18. Adults over the age of 18 receiving a helmet must also sign a waiver.

The event is part of the city’s Vision Zero street safety program, which seeks to reduce the number of preventable traffic deaths in the five boroughs to zero by 2024.

Farm Playground is located at 73rd Avenue between 195th Street and 196th Place. In the event of rain, the giveaway will take place at P.S. 26’s gymnasium at 195-02 69th Ave.

The event is co-sponsored by Councilman Barry Grodenchik, Assemblymember Nily Rozic, Congresswoman Grace Meng and Safe Kids NYC.
