At 7:02 a.m. on Sept. 30, police responded to a 911 call regarding an assault at an Auto Zone store located at 95-01 Northern Blvd. Upon their arrival, they found Darryl Whitfield, 26, in the back seat of a parked car, unconscious and unresponsive, with trauma to his head.
EMS responded to the location and declared Whitfield dead at the scene.
On Oct. 2, police arrested Careem Holder, 30, who allegedly admitted to carrying a handgun with him on two occasions and returning to the scene to destroy evidence.
At this time, it is unknown what the motive behind the incident, however the death has been ruled a homicide by the Medical Examiner.
Police recovered a silver Smith & Wesson .357-caliber handgun from Holder and charged him with two counts on criminal possession of a weapon and one count of tampering with physical evidence. Additional charges are pending the results of the ongoing investigation.
