Sunnyside will celebrate the newly-installed holiday lights around the neighborhood in a ceremony set to take place tonight.
The annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony, organized by Sunnyside Shines, will take place on the north side of 40th Street and Queens Boulevard from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The event celebrates the holiday-themed fixtures recently installed within the Sunnyside Business Improvement District (BID). The lights, blue and white, appear along on Greenpoint Avenue east of 42nd Street, and go through the length of Queens Boulevard from about 38th Street to 50th Street.
As in other years, “Welcome to Sunnyside” fixtures are also installed at the limits of the BID.
The evening event features live music and dance performances, with free hot chocolate and cake to go around. Santa will also pay a visit during the festivities.
The holiday lighting ceremony comes as the lights on the Sunnyside Arch, often lit to match events and other festivities, have been out for several months after being replaced just this year.
Sunnyside Shines, which help maintains the arch, said it is in the process of getting a contractor to fix the lights, and hopes they can be repaired to shine during the holiday season.
