Helms Bros. Mercedes shifts gears

After a two-phase renovation, Helms Bros. Mercedes of Bayside has a showroom as luxurious as its cars.
According to general manager Suzanne Cochrane, the concept behind the new design is called “autohaus” transforming what used to be a parts and service station into a modernized stable for different models of Mercedes.
“We used to display six or seven cars. Now, we could push 50,” said Cochrane, who has been with Helms Bros. for the last 29 years. “It’s definitely exciting and conducive to the client.”
Starting last spring, Helms Bros. kept its doors open during the remodeling process. The first phase expanded the parts and services department into management and sales offices and housing for the cars. The second phase concentrated on the front of the building including updated signage and reception area.
According to Cochrane, the new construction and expansion was “between a $5 and $6 million investment” and added 10,000 square feet. The construction – which began in February – took almost all year to complete. So far, the reviews have been positive.
“The reception from neighbors, surrounding businesses and our clients has been incredible. They are just in awe of [the renovations],” said Cochrane, a former Bayside resident.
Helms Bros. – located 208-24 Northern Boulevard – was founded in 1934 and is one of Bayside’s oldest dealerships. In a statement on the Helms Bros. web site, they offer a toast for 2011:
“Here’s to a new year, a new Helms Bros., and another 75 years providing luxury cars without the luxury price to the Bayside/Queens community.”
