New Affordable Housing Lottery Opens in Astoria, Rent Starts at $990

Fifteen apartments in a newly-constructed Astoria building are up for grabs through the city’s affordable housing lottery for those making a wide range of incomes.

The 15 units, a mix of studios, one-bedroom units and two-bedroom units, at 14-47 29th Ave. cost between $990 and $2,770 a month.

The units are available to people who make 70 percent, 80 percent or 130 percent of the area’s median income a year.

There is one studio apartment available for $990 a month to households of one to two people who make between $38,023 and $59,780 combined annually. A second studio is available for $1,157 a month for households of one to two people who make between $43,749 and $68,320 combined annually.

Three one-bedroom units are available for $1,015 a month to households of one to three people who make between $39,429 and $67,270 combined annually. Two one-bedroom units are available for $1,194 a month to households of one to three people who make between $45,566 and $76,880 combined annually.

Three more one-bedroom units are available for $2,300 a month to households of one to three people who make between $78,858 and $124,930 combined annually.

One two-bedroom unit is available for $1,226 a month to households of two to five people who make between $47,932 and $80,710 combined annually. Two two-bedroom units are available for $1,441 a month to households of two to five people who make between $55,303 and $92,240 combined annually. Lastly, two two-bedroom units are available for $2,770 a month to households of two to five people who make between $94,972 and $149,890 combined annually.

The new building has both indoor and outdoor recreational areas, a coin-operated laundry room and a storage room.

Nearby transit includes the N and W subway lines, as well as the Q69 and Q18 buses.

In addition to monthly rent, tenants are responsible for paying for electricity including heat and gas including the gas stove.

The deadline to apply to the lottery is Feb. 25. Mailed-in applications must be postmarked by that date.

While the units are given out to eligible applicants through a lottery, some preference is given to applicants with vision, mobility and hearing disabilities, as well as municipal employees.

Preference of 50 percent of units goes to residents of Queens Community Board 1.

This building is being constructed through the Inclusionary Housing Program and will receive a tax exemption as a result.
