The city launched Career Discovery NYC, a new digital tool to help New Yorkers find jobs and get training, this week.

The new portal, which can be translated to more than 100 languages, will provide free online trainings to prepare people with the necessary skills to pursue an in-demand career.

The portal provides information on and resources divided into four sections: “Explore,” “Discover,” “Prepare,” and “Train.”

The portal will launch with information about careers in web development, with an Intro to Coding course offered by Fullstack Academy, which will teach the fundamentals of the popular software language, JacaScript. Some individuals may qualify for access to Codeacademy Pro licenses.

Resources for more careers in tech, healthcare, media, industrial and manufacturing will be added in coming weeks.

The NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) Commissioner Jonnel Doris announced the new initiative on Thursday, Aug. 13.

“Thousands of New Yorkers will be conducting much more of their lives in a virtual environment. This portal is a step to ensure that they are well equipped and supported in their career exploration, and to put them on a path toward economic prosperity,” said Doris. “We must continue to adapt to a new normal as our workforce looks to us to help them get back on their feet.”

SBS can provide information on where to obtain low-cost or free internet access and support services.
