The NYPD is investigating the death of an Elmhurst man who was discovered after a three-alarm blaze was extinguished on Tuesday, Aug. 10.

FDNY personnel found 26-year-old Anesti Bulgarsetsi lying face up in his bathtub unconscious and unresponsive with multiple stab wounds in his penthouse apartment at 73-01 41st Ave. EMS pronounced Bulgaresti dead at the scene.

An NYPD spokesman would not disclose whether the investigation is that of a homicide or a suicide, saying that determination would be made after the city’s medical examiner renders a cause of death.

The spokesman said that there was an explosion at the apartment and flames engulfed the apartment. About 140 firefighters responded to a two-alarm blaze around 10:25 a.m., according to the FDNY. The fire was then upgraded to a three-alarm blaze, with firefighters requesting additional trucks for help.

Four firefighters sustained minor injuries and were sent to local hospitals, the FDNY said.

The Department of Buildings sent inspectors to the scene to conduct a structural stability inspection and 44 people were displaced by the blaze, according to the Red Cross.

The police investigation is ongoing.
