A motorist is clinging to life following a police-involved chain of events that unfolded in Maspeth Saturday morning.

Police from the 104th Precinct in Ridgewood responded to a 911 call regarding shots fired at the intersection of Grand Avenue and 58th Avenue just after 6 a.m. They made an arrest at the scene and recovered the firearm, according to the NYPD.

While attempting to close the roadway to secure the crime scene, officers directed a 67-year-old man who was driving a 2020 Tesla T2 traveling westbound on Rust Street to stop his vehicle at the intersection. The man inadvertently stepped on the accelerator instead of his brakes, causing him to veer to the right. The Tesla jumped the curb and smashed into a truck that was parked at the location, police said.

The driver of the Tesla sustained “severe head trauma” and was pinned inside the vehicle. FDNY arrived at the scene and extricated the driver. EMS rushed the man to Elmhurst Hospital Center in critical condition, according to the NYPD. The truck was unoccupied when it was rammed by the Tesla.

The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Squad continues to investigate.
