Two 13-year-old boys die after falling into Jamaica Bay waters off Broad Channel: NYPD

Two teenagers died after they fell into the waters of Jamaica Bay off Broad Channel on Friday afternoon, June 10, according to the NYPD.

The two 13-year-olds from Richmond Hill went into the water near the North Channel Bridge around 11:40 a.m. and were standing on a sandbar when it suddenly collapsed, submerging both teens, according to the NYPD. The two boys did not resurface and NYPD Harbor, NYPD Aviation and the FDNY were deployed to conduct a rescue operation.

The first teen was rescued from the water by divers at around 12:30 p.m. and paramedics performed CPR on him. The second victim was found and pulled from the water around 1:30 p.m. and received CPR, police said.

EMS rushed the young men to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead, according to the NYPD.

On Saturday, the NYPD identified the two 13-year-old victims as Ryan Wong, of 117th Street, and Daniel Persaud, of 95th Street.

The Medical Examiner will determine the causes of death of the two boys and the investigation is ongoing.

One firefighter was injured and transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, according to the FDNY.
