What you need to know about the upcoming primary election in Queens

On June 28, registered voters all across Queens will have the chance to make their voices heard by casting their ballots in the Democratic primaries for several upcoming races, including governor, state assembly and judge of the civil circuit.

The Democratic primaries for congressional and state Senate races were originally going to take place on June 28, but the New York State of Appeals struck down the original map that was written and approved by the Democratic-controlled state Legislature earlier that year. A neutral expert and state judge were then brought in to draw a new map, leading the congressional primaries to be delayed to Aug. 23.

Here’s some information you need to know about individual races, early voting, absentee voting and more:

Absentee ballots

Previously, under New York state law, registered voters could only make a request to receive an absentee ballot if they would not be present in their county of residence during the voting period, if they were sick and/or physically disabled in any way, or if they were caring for someone who is sick and/or has a disability.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, state lawmakers in the New York Legislature passed a law that continued to expand the eligibility to include the risk of spreading or catching any sort of severe infectious disease.

While every registered voter in the state of New York has since become eligible for absentee ballots, voters are no longer allowed to cast their votes in a voting machine if they request to vote by Absentee Ballot.

The last day that voters in New York could request an absentee ballot online was June 13.

Early voting

Early voting is scheduled to take place from June 18 to June 26. Below, see when polling sites are open for early voting.

Saturday, June 18: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday, June 19: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday, June 20: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tuesday, June 21: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Wednesday, June 22: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Thursday, June 23: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Friday, June 24: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday, June 25: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday, June 26: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Election Day, polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
