The Maspeth Lions Club will host a bocce tournament on Sunday, Sept. 25, in an effort to raise funds for local charities.

The tournament will take place at Frank J. Principe Park in Maspeth, starting at 11 a.m. on Sept. 25.

The entry fee for the tournament is $80. Those who sign up will receive a T-shirt and there will also be cash prizes available for the winners of the tournament. Each team is required to have two players.

There will also be food, beverages and entertainment for all, according to Joseph Papavero, president of the Lions Club, who said that the organization is thrilled to be hosting the event for the first time.

“The whole business of the Lions Club is to raise money, so we’re always coming up with new ideas,” Papavero said.

Papavero said the reason the club decided to run the event was that they hadn’t heard of a similar one in the area.

“It’s an outdoor event, which we hope will make it appealing to people who aren’t yet comfortable with large indoor gatherings. It’s also an event that young and old can enjoy and we hope that it brings a mixed group of people on the day,” Papavero said.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to charity. Papavero said that the club will be making donations to several organizations.
