NYPD searches for man who stole wallet from woman inside Astoria church

The NYPD is searching for an individual who robbed a 63-year-old woman on Saturday, Sept. 24, inside of the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in Astoria.

According to NYPD, at approximately 5 p.m., the woman was inside the church at 25-36 37th St., when an unidentified male took her wallet from the bench during a memorial service. When the victim noticed her wallet was missing, she exited the church and noticed the man with her wallet inside his pocket. The victim confronted the man, and he slapped her hand away, breaking her left index finger before fleeing on foot. 

The woman’s wallet contained credit cards and about $30. The victim refused medical attention at the scene but went to an urgent care in the Bronx on her own.  

The man is described to be in his 40s, medium complexion, medium build, about 5’9” with short brown hair. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, black jacket, blue jeans, gray sneakers, glasses and carrying a red wallet.
