Residents in state Senator Joseph Addabbo’s district can now register to receive a free rain barrel at a giveaway in Richmond Hill on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The event will be held in the parking lot of Holy Child Jesus Church, located at 111-11 86th Ave. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Participants must enter the church on 86th Avenue to pick up their rain barrels and exit onto 111th Street in order to keep everyone safe and traffic flowing in one direction.

In order to register for the giveaway, participants must live within Addabbo’s district and call his office and leave their name, address and phone number to be put on the registration list.

Registrants will be asked to show ID at the event to confirm their name and address, and will be able to pick up their rain barrel from 10 a.m. to noon, and from noon to 1 p.m. any leftover barrels will be given to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. The rain barrels that will be given away are 55-gallon plastic barrels that attach to a rain gutter to collect and store excess water during periods of rainfall.

“We held a successful rain barrel giveaway event at Holy Child just last month, and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection was gracious enough to give us another event for September,” Addabbo said. “These rain barrels are extremely popular because they can really help cutting down on a resident’s water bill by collecting and storing rain water that can then be used to water their garden, wash their cars or windows on their house. I encourage anyone who lives in the 15th Senate District to get in touch with my office to register for a free rain barrel.”
