A study conducted by the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) found that the intersection of 78th Avenue and 74th Street in Glendale meets the criteria to implement multiway stop traffic signage, according to a letter sent to Queens Community Board 5 District Manager Gary Giordano.

Community Board 5 (CB 5) first requested DOT to conduct a traffic study at the intersection in April 2022.

The intersection is located near P.S./I.S. 119, which is why the board requested more safety measures for pedestrians, according to Giordano.

“We want to protect the students and the parents and whoever else is trying to cross over there,” Giordano told QNS.

Giordano said that the board is hoping the implementation of multiway stop traffic controls at the intersection will help to slow down traffic on 78th Avenue.

“What this will do is this will stop traffic and at least give students a better chance to cross the street or any other pedestrians,” Giordano said.

He also stated that many drivers are speeding and not giving pedestrians the right of way.

“Too many of them are speeding on residential streets. Too many of them do not give pedestrians the right,” Giordano said.

Giordano told QNS that the board is hoping to see the DOT add more traffic regulation measures in the neighborhood.

We would like to see an all-way stop designation approved and installed now at the other side at P.S./I.S. 119, which is 78th Avenue and 75th Street,” Giordano said.

According to the DOT, they are currently reviewing that request.
