Taiwan’s popular chain Tiger Sugar Bubble Tea is set to roar in the heart of downtown Flushing.

Tiger Sugar, a brand that originated in Taichung, Taiwan, with over 40-plus stores worldwide, will celebrate the grand opening of its first North American store in Flushing on Saturday with a dragon dance and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“I’m very excited. I really want to bring the original taste of Taiwanese bubble tea to North America,” said Calvin Sun, CEO of Tiger Sugar New York, via translator Kit Lee.

Tiger Sugar, located at 40-10 Main St., will offer its first three customers (out of 100) in line a special gift of Taiwanese brown sugar biscuits and a Tiger Sugar model figurine on May 11 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The other customers will also receive the famous brown sugar biscuits.

Known for its milk drink added with dark brown sugar syrup and tiger stripes formed as a layer of sugar coated on the inner side of the cup, Tiger Sugar is a dessert-drink trend that has swept Asia. Its number one best seller is the brown sugar boba milk with cream mousse.

“We have a very secret and unique formula for making the brown sugar in Taiwan,” Sun said. “We import all of the brown sugar, which America doesn’t have. The formula and ingredients will make the smell of the brown sugar combining bubble and whole milk together, making a drink with a lot of layers with a refreshing taste. This is a third-generation bubble tea.”

The first Tiger Sugar store was opened in Taiwan in November of 2017. The popular brand has since then expanded to other countries such as China, Singapore, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Canada, and soon in Australia.

According to Sun, they’re definitely looking forward to opening another store in the future in Queens and outside of New York.

“We decided to open our 48th store in Flushing because most of the people are of Southeast Asia demographic,” Sun said. “However, Flushing is also ethnically diverse, so we have a lot of people gathered here, and we think this is the perfect location.”

Invited and attending guests to the Tiger Sugar grand opening will include Councilman Peter Koo; Dian Yu, executive director of the Flushing BID; state Sen. John Liu; the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York; Siman Yang, president of Tiger Sugar; and Victor Wong, business strategic partner of Tiger Sugar.

Tiger Sugar will be open for business Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
