Jessica Figueroa, Arts & Business

Sport: Soccer
Year: Junior

The talented junior striker enjoyed quite a week, scoring four goals in wins over Francis Lewis and Long Island, twice apiece in each victory. She now has eight in just five games, all wins, on 22 shots.

Figueroa, a Corona native, burst onto the scene as a freshman. She scored 16 goals in the Bulls’ first season in ‘A’ after they had won consecutive ‘B’ crowns. “She’s a skilled player,” Arts & Business Coach Keith Horan said. “If you don’t pay attention to her, leave her in single coverage, she’ll make you pay for it.”

Other coaches took notice. Amidst double- and triple-teams as a sophomore, her production dropped. Figueroa scored just eight times while dealing with “personal issues,” she said, that took away from soccer.

She recommitted herself this spring to soccer and her studies, and the results are there for all to see. The Bulls are in first place in Queens A-VI, ahead of usual contenders Francis Lewis and Townsend Harris. The skillful Figueroa is one reason why.

“She means a lot,” senior midfielder Anakarin Andrickson said. “She’s a big part of the team.”

“I just have a lot of people, especially my coach, helping me, giving me advice,” she said. “Soccer is my main priority. This is what I am here to do. I feel very confident.”
