‘Crank’ up your workout

At the base of The View waterfront condominium complex, wheels are spinning. Upbeat music is playing. Calories are burned as cyclists sprint down flat roads and climb up hills.

Crank Cycling Studio, located at 46-30 Center Boulevard, was started by business partners Anthony Maniscalco and Sunai Rejep a little over a year ago and currently has over 1,000 rides per month. During the spin classes, which range from 45 to 60 minutes and have titles like “Crank 45,” “60 Minute Blast” and “Sunday Morning Crank,” instructors simulate a bike ride using a variety of different resistances, allowing riders to burn 600 to 1,000 calories per visit.

“The instructor basically takes you for a ride as if you were outside,” Maniscalco said.

The studio’s fleet of bikes rests atop stadium seating, ensuring no one’s view of the instructor is blocked. They are also equipped with magnetic resistance rather than pads, which wear out over time.

“Whatever bike you get on, you’re always going to have the same resistance and the same ride,” Maniscalco said. “With a lot of studios, when bikes get used, it’s a challenge to find the bike that you want because you think it’s better than other bikes. With our studio, every bike is the same.”

It’s $23 per ride, with a variety of different packages available as well. For $105, customers get five rides and $190 for 10. Customers also have the option of paying $199 per month for unlimited spinning or getting a six-month unlimited cycling plan for $169 per month. Each ride also comes with complimentary cycling shoes, clean towels and a bottle of water.

More details can be found on the studio’s website, https://www.cranknyc.com, where visitors can also sign up for classes by accessing the class schedule as well as meet the instructors to get a sense of their background and training style.
