A Queens man and his accomplice have been charged with conspiring to solicit aid to support terrorist organizations fighting American troops in Afghanistan, officials announced Thursday.
The two men were allegedly engaging in a plan to supply terrorist organizations, which included the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, with warm winter clothing and electronics, according to District Attorney Richard Brown. The supplies, said Brown, could have allowed the terrorists to “endure the harsh Afghan winters and extend the fighting season.”
They “were not merely conspiring to supply clothing items to people in Afghanistan, they were conspiring to make the enemy more effective in engaging and killing American soldiers. Fortunately, the arrests of these defendants prevented their alleged plan from being carried out,” said Brown.
Humayoun Ghoulan Nabi, 27, a Pakistani national, who lives in Elmhurst, and Ismail Alsarabbi, 32, a Brooklyn resident who is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Kuwait, were arraigned on Tuesday on charges of second-degree soliciting or providing support for an act of terrorism and fifth-degree conspiracy. They were both ordered held on $500,000 bond or cash.
If convicted, they face up to seven years in prison.
