Racing fans will gather at the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, L.I., Saturday to possibly witness sports history as California Chrome races for the Triple Crown.

If California Chrome wins in the race, at 6:50 p.m, he will be the 12th Triple Crown champion overall and the first since 1978.

The last time a horse attempted to win the Triple Crown was in 2012.

I’ll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, but was scratched just 30 hours before the race because of an injury.
