Police ID worker killed in Sunnyside school construction site fall

SUNNYSIDE — An elevator construction worker was killed last Thursday morning after falling down an elevator shaft from the fifth floor of a school that under construction in Sunnyside, the NYPD said.

Police received a 911 call at 8:15 a.m. and responded to the PS 313 worksite, at 45-45 42nd St., where Staten Island resident Thomas Patane was removed from the basement, authorities said.

It was not clear what caused the 26-year-old worker to fall, police said.

Patane died in transit to Elmhurst Hospital Center, authorities said.

A second elevator construction worker on the fourth floor was injured by falling debris and was also taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

The $57 million elementary school is scheduled to open in September.
