Deadly Muggers Walk to Jail

Ozone Pk. Duo Tied To Woodhaven Murder

Two Ozone Park men were arraigned Wednesday morning, July 16, for fatally beating a robbery victim at a Woodhaven intersection earlier this month, prosecutors announced.

Carlos Genno, 22, of Liberty Avenue and Nestor (a.k.a. Bryant) Rodriguez, 20, of 90th Street were ordered held without bail on seconddegree murder and first-degree robbery charges for the July 9 attack that claimed the life of Nazmul Islam, 55, of 85th Road in Ozone Park.

Reportedly, both suspects were initially arrested early on Sunday morning, July 13, for allegedly possessing drugs and jaywalking through a Richmond Hill intersection. Detectives additionally linked Genno to a bloody assault last month of a teenager in Ozone Park and a sexual relationship with an underage girl.

According to information provided by the Queens District Attorney’s office, Genno and Rodriguez allegedly attacked Islam at the corner of 76th Street and Atlantic Avenue at about 4:34 a.m. last Wednesday morning.

Prosecutors said the two suspects grabbed hold of Islam and punched and choked him repeatedly, knocking him unconscious. They reportedly removed a sum of cash from the victim, then fled in an unknown direction.

Officers from the 102nd Precinct found Islam later that morning after receiving a 911 call regarding an unconscious male at the location. EMS units arrived at the scene and pronounced the victim dead.

According to police, 102nd Precinct officers stopped Genno and Rodriguez at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday morning after observing them jaywalking through the intersection of 90th Avenue and 130th Street in Richmond Hill, causing a vehicle to swerve out of their way.

Upon stopping and questioning the duo, law enforcement sources said, the suspects allegedly admitted to possessing molly (also known as ecstacy). Quantities of the illegal drug were found in their possession during a subsequent search.

P.O. William Chan of the 102nd Precinct booked both men on charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance and disorderly conduct.

Based on information obtained during their investigation, members of the 102nd Precinct Detective Squad later linked the two perpetrators to Islam’s murder.

Genno was also tied to the June 10 assault of a 17-year-old boy inside a location on Liberty Avenue near 109th Street at about 6:20 p.m. that day.

According to prosecutors, Genno and a co-defendant-Abrar Hussain, 18, of 115th Street in Richmond Hill-repeatedly struck the victim in the head with a hammer. The victim suffered a laceration that required four staples and three stitches to close.

Hussain was arrested last Wednesday on charges of seconddegree assault, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment; he was subsequently released on his own recognizance and ordered to return to court on Aug. 4.

Detectives further booked Genno on third-degree rape charges for allegedly having sex with a 16-yearold girl inside a Liberty Avenue location in Ozone Park on the night of June 28.

Police sources stated Rodriguez has a prior arrest history that includes charges of robbery, assault and drug possession.

Genno and Rodriguez must again appear in court on July 31, said a spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown.

Det. Timothy Harrington of the 102nd Precinct Detective Squad investigated the murder, while P.O. Philip Degorter of the 106th Precinct Detective Squad investigated the June assault. Det. Roseangelica Osegueda of the NYPD Queens Special Victims Squad investigated the statutory rape case.
