Christ the King girls team remains undefeated in 2015
Christ the King’s girls team had a tough December that saw them split their eight games with losses to Bishop Loughlin, Paul IV (VA), Braintree (MA) and Capital Prep (CT). So far in January the Lady Royals are 4-0 after a 66-53 victory over South Shore in the Nike vs. Under Armour Challenge on Jan. 11. Junior Sydney Zambrotta scored 21 points and had five assists while fellow junior Dominique Toussaint added 16. Coach Bob Mackey’s young team faced off against Mary Louis on Jan. 13 and then has 10 days between games.
Bayside hoping to get back on track
Bayside’s 88-45 loss to Cardozo on Dec. 18 was the second in a five-game losing streak. The last two have been close losses at Martin Van Buren and Campus Magnet. On Jan. 6, the Commodores dropped a 45-44 decision to the Vee Bees. Two days later, they were handed a 63-61 defeat by Magnet. Coach Steve Scharf’s team is 4-6 in league play and began a stretch of three straight home games by facing Flushing on Jan. 13 and will face Edison on Jan. 22.
Cornwall’s triple-doubles highlights perfect week for Francis Lewis
Through Jan. 12, junior Jaheam Cornwall’s 237 points through 10 league games are the fourth-most in the city and second in Queens only to Justin Wright-Foreman. He is averaging 23.7 points, which is the second highest average in the city. Cornwall is also averaging 6.5 assists, which is third in the city and the best in Queens. Cornwall enhanced both totals with 27 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in a 101-44 win at Grover Cleveland on Jan. 9. A day earlier, Cornwall had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a 74-31 win over Aviation. Cornwall also had 28 points in a thrilling 51-50 win over Bowne on Jan. 6 that was decided by a buzzer-beating jumper by senior Quentin Williams. The Patriots are 10-0 in league play and 14-1 overall through Jan. 12. Francis Lewis visited Newtown on Jan. 13 and will host Queens Vocational on Jan. 15.
High School of Construction opens 2015 with two league wins
On Dec. 22, the Red Hawks were handed their first league loss when they fell at Cardozo. In 2015, the Red Hawks have won league games over Campus Magnet and Edison. In a 75-64 win at Campus Magnet on Jan. 6, forward Kyle Allman had 31 points and 11 rebounds while guard Justin Wright-Foreman added 25. Two days later in a 92-60 win over Edison, Wright-Foreman had 23 points while Allman added 16. Coach Cory Semper’s team is 14-1 overall and following a visit to Beach Channel on Jan. 13, the Red Hawks will travel to Washington D.C. and face Oldsmar Christian Academy (FL) and Faith Baptist Christian (GA).
St. John’s men drops out of top 25, lands key recruit
The Red Storm are 0-3 in league play and 11-4 overall, and on Jan. 13 the program received some good news when guard Brandon Sampson from Madison Prep in Louisiana committed to St. John’s. Sampson is ranked No. 32 in ESPN’s top 100 and is the sixth best guard according to ESPN. Coach Steve Lavin has four scholarships remaining for next season and was spotted in the stands at the Jan. 11 showcase at Christ the King. St. John’s fell out of the AP top 25 and will continue its schedule Jan. 14 against Providence.
St. John’s women rebound from two losses
The Red Storm rebounded from losses to Connecticut and Butler by getting a 61-38 win at Creighton by shooting 74 percent in the second half. Junior guard Aliyyah Handford scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half. Forward Amber Thompson added nine rebounds, including the 900th at. St. John’s. The Red Storm are 13-3, received seven points in this week’s AP Top 25 poll and have home games against DePaul on Jan. 16 and Marquette on Jan. 18.
Holy Cross gets Battle of the Boulevard win over St. Francis Prep
Holy Cross rebounded from a blowout loss against Bishop Loughlin by picking up a 66-55 win over at St. Francis Prep on Jan. 9. Holy Cross is 7-6 and 3-3 in league play through Jan. 12. Holy Cross faced Christ the King on Jan. 13 and then will host Xaverian on Jan. 16.
Raynor scores 26 in debut, helps Springfield Gardens stay undefeated
Senior guard Travis Raynor averaged 18.2 points in 17 regular season and playoff games last season but did not start this season until Jan. 9. Against Jamaica, Raynor scored 26 points with half of those points coming at the foul line. Three years ago, Raynor averaged 22 points for the Springfield Gardens junior varsity team. Joel Boyce added 18 and seven rebounds for Springfield Gardens, which put its 8-0 record in Queens A East on the line Jan. 14 with against Pathways College Prep.
