LaGuardia power outage affecting flights: PANY&NJ

By Tom Momberg

LaGuardia Airport began experiencing power outages early Friday, which were the result of ongoing construction at the airport, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey

The power went out at about 4:30 a.m., and the Port Authority said around 10:30 a.m., electrical staff was still working to repair the issues. Backup generators were switched on to assist, but portions of Terminal C, which is serviced by Delta Airlines and US Airways, as well as Parking Lots 4 and 5 and loading bridges have all been affected by the outage, the Port Authority said.

Online flight trackers were displaying over 100 flight cancellations in the early morning, but the Port Authority said flights were resuming in Terminal C with some delays. Flights were being delayed an average of nearly three hours as of 10:30 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s airport status monitoring system.

All flight bridges, which connect air crafts to their terminals, have been fully functioning, and no injuries have been reported, according to the Port Authority.

Both airport and Delta Customer Service staff have been attending to passengers. The Port Authority is encouraging anyone flying in or out of LaGuardia on Friday to check the status of their flight with their airline carrier.
