Bellerose man killed by drunk driver in Long Island hit-and-run

A 22-year-old Queens man riding his bicycle on a Long Island street early Thursday morning was killed by a drunk driver, who later tried to flee the scene but was arrested, according to authorities.

On Oct. 1 at about 12:36 a.m. Melissa McKiski, a Florida resident, struck Charles Velasquez of Bellerose as he was riding his bicycle eastbound in the westbound curb lane on Old Country Road in Carle Place, Long Island, police said.

McKiski left the scene but was later apprehended at Herricks Road and Helen Road in Mineola.

Velasquez was taken to Winthrop University Hospital where at 4:32 a.m. he was pronounced dead.

McKiski was charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a fatality.
