Second victim in Rosedale Halloween shooting dies

The second victim in the shooting of two teenagers in Rosedale during the Halloween weekend died Wednesday afternoon as police continued to search for two suspects wanted in connection with the incident.

Marcus Mendez, 18, of Rosedale, who was in criritical condition following the shooting died Wednesday at about 3:18 p.m. at Jamaica Hospital, according to the police.

At about 8:53 p.m. Saturday, police responded to calls of two men shot at 240-15 144th Ave., according to the police.

Upon arrival, they discovered Peyton Manwaring, 19, of Rosedale, with a gunshot wound to the torso. He was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital, police said.

Mendez was also found at the scene with gunshot wounds to his leg and torso but remained in critical condition until Wednesday, they said.

Police described the suspects as two men wearing black hooded sweatshirts and were observed via surveillance video following Manwaring immediately before the shooting.

No arrests have been made and the investigation was ongoing, a police spokesman said.

The borough was the scene of two other crimes during Halloween weekend.

At about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, a 27-year-old man was getting into his 2015 Range Rover in front of 35-80 81st St. in Jackson Heights when a man in another vehicle wearing a mask pulled up next to him and shot him four times in the torso and once in the arm, officials said.

The victim was in stable condition, police said.

Early last Friday morning, a 56-year-old man who police believe was intoxicated was impaled on a fence at his home at 133 Beach 120th St. in Belle Harbor after trying to gain access to his locked sixth-floor apartment from the rooftop and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the police.

The investigations were ongoing, according to a police spokesman.
