Criminals and car crashes highlight this week’s top stories from Queens

It seems that the warmer weather brought out the criminals this week in Queens, as seven of the top 10 stories from the week involved crimes or car crashes.

The Orlando shooter who committed the worst mass shooting in the country’s history was born in New Hyde Park.

A man from Glendale was killed when a truck smashed into his car in Long Island City.

But it wasn’t all doom and gloom in the “World’s Borough,” as tech giant Google partnered with Queens Library to offer coding classes to more than 300 bright kids.

Here are the top 10 stories from around Queens this week:

  1. Google partnered with 26 Queens Libraries to bring free coding classes to more than 300 kids across the borough.
  2. Omar Mateen, the shooter responsible for killing 49 people and injuring 53 more at a popular gay night club in Orlando over the weekend, was found to have been from New Hyde Park.
  3. Cops are searching for a man wanted for mugging a man on Tuesday, June 7, around Poppenhusen Avenue and 115th Street near MacNeil Park in College Point. The suspect punched the 23-year-old victim in the face while holding him at knifepoint before fleeing empty-handed.
  4. These two brazen crooks stole an entire ATM in a mid-afternoon heist in Ozone Park. The two suspects walked into the Ozone Howard Smoke Shop, placed the store’s ATM on a hand truck, wheeled it outside and loaded it right into their car.
  5. The retired cop, 69, who shot an attempted robber in the face was commended by the NYPD Chief of Detectives for stopping the robbery.
  6. Two men were found dead after their BMW flipped over a guardrail along the Grand Central Parkway near Astoria and Ditmars Boulevards.

  8. A 53-year-old resident of Glendale was killed when his four-door sedan was hit by a truck at the intersection of 37th Street and Review Avenue in Long Island City on Wednesday, June 13.
  9. A 51-year-old man died after being struck by two vehicles while attempting to walk across four lanes on the northbound Whitestone Expressway between the Linden Place and 20th Avenue exit on Thursday, June 16.
