Watch MMROCKCAMP rock and roll at the Fort Totten Fireworks show in Bayside tonight!

If you’re ready to amplify the excitement at tonight’s Second Annual Independence Day Fireworks Show and Concert, head to Fort Totten Park in Bayside at 5 p.m.

The bigger and better fireworks show, sponsored by Councilman Paul Vallone, will feature musical performances by the energetic MichelleMarie RockBand Camp (MMROCKCAMP), starting at 6 p.m. The Phil Costa & Something Special Band will perform shortly after.

MMROCKCAMP is orchestrated by guitarist Michelle Marie, who has worked with major artists like Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Beverly Bond and Black Girls Rock, Patti Labelle, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, to name a few.

“I’m so excited. We have been working so hard. We had a great event last year, but I told the kids that we have to do even better, we have to be epic this year,” Marie said. “I’m actually really looking forward to the event and I’m really performing with my students tonight.”

The group of eight children and two faculty members will perform hit songs like “We Will Rock You” by Queen, “Purple Rain” by the late legend Prince, “Holiday” by Madonna and “Enter Sandman” by Metallica.

Marie started a Young Artist Program in 2013, designed for students who are taking guitar lessons but prefer to practice their skills in a band setting.

The four-week Young Artist Program starts on July 11 to Aug. 4, operating Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students ages 6 to 10 will learn how to read music, basic and advanced rudiments, ear training, and soloing techniques and song form, and they will experience performance coaching, semi-private and private lessons, and ensemble coaching. After the month-long session, a big finale rock concert will be held on Aug. 5 at 7 p.m.

“The best way to practice what you are learning in private lessons is to practice with other musicians,” Marie wrote on her MMROCKCAMP website to inspire students. “Your growth will be astounding as you bring your musicality and practice to a band.”
