Rain and clouds couldn’t dampen the celebration in Long Island City to celebrate the country’s 240th birthday on Monday, July 4.

Hundreds of people waited out the passing storm — hiding under picnic blankets, trees, umbrellas and anything else they could find — along the East River at Hunters Point Park to watch the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks celebration.

The Empire State Building was lit up in patriotic red, white and blue.

As day turned into night, the crowd watched as fireworks turned the night sky beautiful shades of red, blue, green and purple. The explosions from the fireworks echoed off the nearby buildings as the audience cheered and applauded the impressive display.
