The 9th Annual Bushwick Film Festival (BFF) kicked off in style with a glamorous red carpet event at House of Yes in Bushwick on Thursday night.

Filmmakers, artists, actors, special guests and industry professionals filled House of Yes, located at 2 Wyckoff Ave., for the BFF’s opening night screening of “I Am Gangster,” directed by Moritz Rechenberg.

“I Am Gangster” is a crime drama focusing on the damaging effect of gang culture on the Latino community, especially on youth.

“It was an amazing film. The story just drew me in,” said Kweighbaye Kotee, founder and CEO of BFF. “It is a story of gang culture and how it impacts an entire community. It is very raw, and very indie. There is a lot of action, and the cast is made up of young Latino people. It really shows our diversity.”

This year’s festival — which runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 2 — highlights a wide variety of diverse and talented filmmakers from nearly 30 countries from across the globe. Over the four-day festival, BFF will showcase 27 screenings including narrative feature films, documentary feature films, several series of short films, art house films and web series.
