Attorney Clyde Vanel has won the race to succeed state Assemblywoman Barbara Clark, who died earlier this year, according to unofficial vote totals from the New York State Board of Elections.

Vanel faced Republican challenger Goldy-Francois Wellington and Leroy Gadsden on the NIP-New Ideas ticket. State BOE totals show Vanel with about 84 percent of the vote, with 68 of 74 precincts reporting. He received 34,167 votes out of 40,588 total.

Vanel has pledged to emphasize business development and increasing protection for homeowners in his district, which includes parts of Cambria Heights, Glen Oaks, Queens Village, Rosedale and Springfield Gardens.
