By Bill Parry

A 72-year-old man was struck and killed by a taxi while crossing the eastbound Grand Central Parkway in East Elmhurst late Monday night, according to the NYPD. Police from the 115th Precinct, responding to a 911 call around 11:30 p.m., found the victim lying on the roadway unconscious and unresponsive with severe head trauma.

He was taken to New York Hospital Queens where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Further investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined than a yellow cab struck the victim as he was trying to cross the Grand Central Parkway from south to north near Northern Boulevard. The cab driver did swerve to miss the pedestrian but struck him with the drivers side front end.

The driver remained at the scene. There were no arrests and the investigation was continuing, according to the NYPD.
