Man fatally struck by SUV while trying to walk across expressway in Kew Gardens Hills

Trying to walk across the Van Wyck Expressway at rush hour proved deadly for a 41-year-old man who was struck and killed by an SUV in Kew Gardens Hills on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident took place at 4:50 p.m. on Dec. 13 on the northbound lanes of the expressway at Jewel Avenue.

According to law enforcement sources, the 41-year-old man — whose identity was not released pending family notification — was observed jumping over the median of the highway and walking into the northbound lanes. As he did so, he was struck by a red Subaru Forester SUV heading northbound on the Van Wyck.

The SUV driver remained at the scene after hitting the man.

Officers from the 107th Precinct and EMS units responded to the incident. The victim, who suffered severe body trauma, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests have been made, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is still looking into the matter.
