A Jamaica nonprofit specializing in legal assistance will offer concerned community members the chance to learn more about the benefits of New York’s status as a sanctuary city.
Legal Hand Clinic at 149-13 Jamaica Ave. will offer presentations and information this Friday, at the same time Donald Trump takes the oath of office to become the nation’s 45th president.
“At this important and uncertain time, let’s get together to reaffirm our commitment to all members in our community,” the clinic said in an e-mail detailing services that would be available on the day of the inauguration.
Legal Hand’s Inauguration Day presentations will focus on hate crime prevention, and rights for LGBTQ citizens, workers and immigrants. Attorneys at the clinic will also be available to answer any questions attendees may have about housing law and tenants’ rights.
The clinic offers free legal information or referrals on a variety of different legal challenges New Yorkers may face. It is part of the Center for Court Innovation, which supports programs that will lead to humane reforms in the criminal justice system.
The clinic intends to hold more “Know Your Rights” seminars on Wednesdays in the months to come that will focus on community needs. Previous seminars have included information for undocumented immigrants and individuals accessing public assistance.
The clinic during Trump’s inauguration will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to Legal Hand.
