Proposed plans for a park in southern Queens, a real estate report and a substantial drug bust made the top news stories of the week in Queens.

The first seeds of the proposed “QueensWay” park may be coming to Glendale and Forest Hills. The Trust for Public Land is looking to turn the unused Rockaway Beach Branch Line of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) — which has been abandoned for more than half a century — into a 3.5-mile park. Spanning from Rego Park to Ozone Park, plans for the park include new play spaces and safe walking and biking routes. The project does face some opposition: dissenters of the QueensWay linear park believe it would be better to reactivate rail service to the Rockaway Beach Branch Line.

In a real estate assessment conducted by PropertyShark, Long Island City and Astoria made no. 8 and no. 9 on a list of New York City’s 12 hottest neighborhoods for 2017. Real Estate professionals also recommended that first-time home buyers head to Jamaica, where the median sales price for a home in 2016 was $418,500.

A driver who was caught blocking a Flushing driveway last Thursday afternoon was also found to have a large number of prescription drugs in his possession illegally, police reported. Sheng Lin, 35, was taken into custody on charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal use of drug paraphernalia.
