Long Island Rail Road faces Tuesday morning delays

By TimesLedger Staff

After the second derailment in Penn Station within 10 days, the MTA said the Long Island Rail Road expects some delays during the Tuesday morning rush hour.

Amtrak crews were still in the process of repairing the damage that occurred after three middle cars of a New Jersey train derailed inside the station as it approached Track 9 about 9 a.m. Monday. Four people suffered minor injuries.

Service was disrupted on the LIRR during the day and through the evening rush hour.

In the evening the LIRR said it would have to cancel 10 trains during the morning rush so that Amtrak could continue with its work to fix the tracks. The LIRR also reduced some traffic to give Amtrak and New Jersey Transit room to run their trains.

Amtrak is in charge of maintaining the station and the tunnels.

The Long Island Rail Road, the nation’s largest commuter railroad, cautioned passengers to prepare for overcrowding and delays Tuesday morning.

On March 24 an Amtrak Acela train sideswiped a NJ Transit train inside Penn Station in another minor derailment. Service was affected on the LIRR, NJ Transit and Amtrak.
